We recently went to my sister-in-law’s to celebrate my niece’s 17th birthday! It seemed very bittersweet. On one hand, it didn’t seem right that soon she’ll be away at college but on the other hand, I’m so happy for what life has in store for her.
But with all of this, it really led me to think about the last 17 years and what I had accomplished.
GET YOUR LIFE IN CONTROL!
Ever feel like you're spinning out of control? Are you longing for a calmer life? My Happy Life Starter Guide will give you the 3 steps to beat overwhelm so YOU can start living a happier life. Get it now while it’s free!
Sure, I’ve had a nice life. I’m married, 2 kids, a wonderful extended family, and great friends. I should feel blessed. And I am but I still felt somewhat saddened.
I mean, what have I done for myself for the past 17 years? When I thought about it all, it wasn’t much. And I wasn’t satisfied with that. I felt like I didn’t have a purpose in my life. I had no idea where I wanted the next 17 years of my life to go. But I knew I wanted a better life.

Forward Progress
Time passes us by and unless we make an effort to appreciate each day or push ourselves to better ourselves, all we’re going to do is sit by while the rest of the world keeps going. We’ll never have forward momentum but instead, live a stagnant life.
And what does that do for our life? Are we happy with that knowing we spent our life with no big moments and no forward progression. That we spent our life not accomplishing anything and nothing to be proud of. What kind of life is that?
Chad Michael Murray once said, “our biggest regrets are not for the things we have done but for the things we haven’t done”.
Regret will seep in if we don’t try. But if we make an effort to push ourselves, get out of our comfort zone, and be present in each passing day, we can look back on our life near the end and be thankful that our life was fulfilled, that it had purpose and that we have no regrets.
Wouldn’t that be the life you want?
I know I do.
So, how do you get to live a life that has purpose, that wakes you up every day feeling happy and fulfilled? It’s starts with a few steps to get you there. Keep reading to find them out.

Steps to a Better Life
Get Out and Do Things
If we sit around and don’t do anything that excites us or energizes us, how do we expect to have a better life? We have to push ourselves to get out, to show up, and to take charge of the life we want to live. Get crystal clear about what you want to get out of this life and go for it. No one else will do this for you. You’re in charge of your life. Show up to things that matter to you.
Set Goals
Without goals, we will have no idea what we are striving for. We’ll be carelessly going through life, not knowing what we should be working on. Setting goals allows you to see what’s important to you and what you need to be shooting for every day. Set big goals for yourself and then break them down into manageable tasks that you can work on every day to get you closer to accomplishing those big goals. Finishing a goal would get you so pumped up and excited. Go for it.
Stop the Excuses
All excuses do for us is allow us to give up, stop trying, and lead us into a dull life. Although they are tempting, they’re time stoppers. Don’t let excuses derail you. When you want something, you have to push through the excuses. Times will be hard and you will want to give up but don’t let yourself. Giving up is failure. Excuses will only hurt you. They lead to nothing productive but letting you still wallow in your life. Don’t let excuses stop you from leading your best life. You deserve your best life and excuses will only stall you all the way.
Change Your Attitude
If you’re grumpy all the time and have a poor attitude on life, how do you expect to have a life you enjoy? Everyone has a choice. You wake up everyday and have a choice how you’ll feel that day. You can have a negative attitude and your day will suffer because of it. Or you can have a positive attitude about life and your day will be pleasant. It’s your choice, it’s always your choice. How will you choose to lead tomorrow? With a positive attitude or a negative one? Just remember which one will move you to a better life.

Start a Gratitude Journal
So many times, we focus on the bad things in life and don’t really take the time to notice the good things. And I know you may think there’s nothing good about your life but I also know there is always some good about it. Maybe it’s the roof over your head, your family that you love unconditionally, or maybe it’s the socks that keep your feet warm. We all have things we’re thankful for. Think about your life and what you’re thankful for.
Write it down, every day. Write down as many things as you can think of that you’re grateful for. When you feel low (which we all feel time to time), read over your entries in your gratitude journal. It will boost your spirits even if it’s just a little. It can make such a positive difference when you start focusing on things you’re truly thankful for.
Be Around People
One of the best things we can do for ourselves is by having relationships with other people. It boosts our spirits and puts us in a better mood. It’s hard to complain when we’re laughing and having a great time. Make it a priority to hang out with friends, go out with your spouse, or spend time with coworkers at the next happy hour. Just surround yourself with conversations and enjoy the benefit that comes with it.
Final Thoughts
It all starts with you. If you want to be happy with your life, you need to make the changes. Don’t let life drag you down anymore. We all want a better life. And we can have it by following these steps.
Remember – get outside and do things you love, go after your big goals, stop the excuses, change your attitude, start a gratitude journal, and surround yourself with people you enjoy.
I know you can have a life you enjoy, that fills you up, and excites you. Make the changes you need and start living the best life that’s possible for you!
Let’s continue this conversation – What steps will you take tomorrow to lead you to a better life?
