Time management used to be difficult for me. I would start off my day thinking I knew what needed to get done and spend the next 12 hours or so doing a little bit here and there but never really accomplishing much by the end of the day. My husband would come home from work and ask me what I did that day and I had no idea what to tell him. What had I done that day?
Does any of that sound familiar to you? Do you go about your day wondering what you should be working on but never feeling satisfied with what you got done each day. This is how my days looked so I knew I had to do things differently.
So, I stated looking at how I could change. I realized I needed to get better with my time management. Right then, I had zero skills on time management. I was an epic failure when it came to managing my time. So, I read some books (Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy is a great one to read), read a few blog posts on the subject, and listened to a couple of podcasts and here’s what I’ve discovered. If I wanted to improve my time management skills, I needed to get crystal clear on what were my most important tasks. In other words, my goals.

Figuring Out Your Goal
Now, to start, I figured out what my most important goals were for me this year. Then, from that list, I picked one goal that meant the most to me if I accomplished it this year. One goal that would make me the happiest if I completed it. Once I had that goal in mind, I broke it down into manageable chunks of what I needed to do to accomplish this goal. This gave me a plan. With that plan, I then figured out which tasks I would start with for each month. Those monthly tasks were then divided up by week. Finally, I used those weekly tasks and broke those down to daily tasks that I could work on every day. And ultimately, each of those daily tasks brings me closer to my #1 goal.

It’s all about taking that big goal and breaking it down into manageable chunks. Because let’s me honest, having a big goal that might even seem scary, could have us paralyzed and thinking, “where do we start, what are our first steps”. This will get us nowhere. We have to break each step down chunk by chunk until we get to the manageable steps that we can work on each day.
This is a simple process that when done properly, works extremely well. There’s no time spent spinning your wheels wondering what you should be working on next or you’re not wasting time working on the wrong things that don’t get you anywhere.
You have a plan of what gets worked on each day. Each task is in line with your goal so each task that gets finished will get you closer to finishing that goal.
How to Accomplish a Goal
So, let’s go back over all those steps again:
- Make a list of 5 -10 goals that you’d like to accomplish this year and write them down.
- Identify one of those goals as your main goal, a goal that would make you the happiest if you accomplished it.
- Write down this goal EVERYWHERE. Keep it as a constant reminder of what you are working toward.
- Break that big goal down into manageable chunks.
- Plan those chunks over the next 12-month period.
- For your current month, plan those monthly tasks into weekly tasks.
- From the weekly tasks, you’ll break those down to daily tasks.

Here’s an example with weight loss. Your big goal for this year could be to lose 24 pounds. So, to break that down over the year, you’d want to lose 2 lbs. per month. Now, those 2 lbs. per month can be broken down per week. Each week, you’d want to lose a 1/2 pound. So your daily tasks would be to eat healthy foods and exercise to lose that 1/2 lb. per week.
This is so much easier than thinking you have to lose 24 lbs. but have no idea where to start. You also won’t see the progress as clearly when you start losing the weight.
You can do this with one goal or multiple goals if you wish but make sure you’re picking each goal that’s important to you. If you chose to do more than one goal though, it will mean more work for you. If you can keep it to just one goal, that will be much more manageable. You don’t want your daily goals to overwhelm you.
My big goal for this year is to create a successful blog. With that goal, I know what I need to do over the next year to make it successful. And with each of those tasks, I will break them down into daily tasks that have me working on my blog every single day.
Final Thoughts
We can all accomplish our goals if we break them down and stay committed to them. And goals are easier to stay committed when we have a plan to do them.
Working on our goals won’t be easy. Most things we want in life are hard. But think how you’d feel if you set a big goal and you were able to accomplish it. How would that make you feel?
Your life is important. You need to make your goals a priority. Because if you don’t, no one else will.
What big goal are you looking to take on this year?
