Do you like to shop? What is your favorite store to shop at? Do you ever overspend when you shop there or are you a list follower?
I like to shop and most of the time I shop with a list. I try very hard not to stray from my list. But it can be hard. Finding something on sale and thinking you have to buy it. Knowing you just got paid so why not splurge a little.
There are so many ways that things tempt us. But if we can control these temptations, maybe we can stop the overspending?
GET YOUR LIFE IN CONTROL!
Ever feel like you're spinning out of control? Are you longing for a calmer life? My Happy Life Starter Guide will give you the 3 steps to beat overwhelm so YOU can start living a happier life. Get it now while it’s free!
Wouldn’t you like to have some extra cash leftover at the end of a month? I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t!
Here are some tricks to help you to stop overspend and resist the temptations:
.
.
.
.
Don’t shop alone
Take someone with you. Take a list too and stick to it. Have the person you’re with, hold you accountable. Tell this person that you need to stick to your list and to help you if you feel tempted at the store
.
Know your reason for overspending
It could be stress you’re feeling, grief you’re dealing with, or being upset over something. Identify why you overspend and deal with the reason why. If it’s stress, try going for a run or listening to your favorite music. If it’s grief you’re dealing with, call a friend. Or if it’s being upset about something, try baking cookies or doing something helpful for a friend. Most times, if we can fill ourselves back up, we’ll lose the urge to want to spend money.

Leave credit cards at home
Don’t take credit cards with you if you can’ t control your spending. Just take cash and then you’ll be forced to not overspend. This hard to do but having credit cards with you makes it too easy to overspend. Also, leave your ATM card at home too so you aren’t tempted
.
Choose the right cart
Choose the right size cart for your shopping. If it’s your weekly grocery run, you’ll probably need a big cart but if you are only grabbing a couple of things, go with a smaller cart or a basket. According to Reader’s Digest, shoppers buy 40 percent more stuff when given a cart double the size they usually need.

Try a no spend challenge
The idea behind this is to only buy what you NEED for the duration of your no spend challenge. No spur of the moment shopping trips and nothing extra goes in the shopping cart from your list. Only necessities. You can try a challenge for a week, two weeks, or as long as you want. It’s always exciting at the end to see how much you actually spent and see what you were able to save. If you have the data from how much you’ve spent from past weeks, compare your no spending challenge to previous weeks to see how much you’ve saved.
.
Shop with a budget
Setup a budget each week. Try setting a budget for the things you can control (groceries, eating out, etc). Figure out an amount that you are comfortable spending each week. Roughly, families spend about $25 – $40 per person each week for groceries. I budget $150/week for groceries and $50/week for eating out for my family of four. When you’ve set up your budget amount(s), try your best to not go over it.

Stay out of aisles that tempt you
Whatever your weaknesses are, don’t tempt yourself by going in those aisles if you don’t have to. If it’s the makeup aisle or the home storage section (that’s my guilty pleasure) that tempt you, don’t go near the aisles. If you don’t see it, you won’t be tempted.
Unsubscribe from Mailing List
Stop the mail and the emails you get from stores. The only purpose of these is to alert you to sales, hoping to get you in and spend money. If you stop these mailings, you’ll lessen the temptation to shop.
Give yourself 24 hours
By going home (or leaving the website) and not allowing yourself to buy that item(s), you are giving yourself time to think about the purchase. Most times, when we give ourselves time to think about it (and sleep on it), we’ll rethink buying it. However, if the desire towards the item(s) is still there, go ahead and buy it. It’s not an emotional buy if you still want it after all that time.
You have your reasons for overspending. Now it’s up to you to figure out why you do it and use these steps to correct it. I just hope I’ve inspired you enough to take action and stop overspending. You can do this. All you need to do is follow these steps.
- Shop with someone.
- Figure out what triggers your overspending.
- Don’t take credit cards if you don’t have to.
- Choose the right size cart for your shopping.
- Try a no spend challenge.
- Setup a weekly budget and stick to it.
- Stay away from aisles that tempt you.
- Stop the mailing lists.
- Give yourself 24 hours to rethink the purchase.
In doing these steps, I feel confident that you will overcome your overspending.

Great tips to avoid overspending, Robyn! I like your point about leaving your credit card at home. The unsubscribe one was a great idea as well. Very original. It can be challenging to avoid overspending indeed. I try to spread my purchases out over the year and I try to avoid impulse buying. That way I can think about it and change my mind about buying it. Thanks for sharing!
