I love listening to inspirational and motivational podcasts. It’s so easy for me to feel down on myself and by listening to these podcasts, I’ve been able to resonate with a lot of them and it’s so easy for me to find time to listen to them. I’ll listen to one when I’m in the car by myself or doing chores around the house.
So, the other day, I listened to a TedTalk with Amanda Palmer about the Art of Asking, and it really made me think about my life. I have a really hard time asking for help. And I don’t know, maybe it has to do with my confidence or my self-doubt about myself. Or maybe it’s my fear of feeling shame or failure.

And in thinking about my life, I wondered how many other people have a difficult time asking for things. When was the last time you asked someone for help? And I don’t mean asking your family. How often do you ask for help from your friends or from your community?
It’s hard to put ourselves out there to let someone else know that we can’t do it alone. To let someone else know that we are struggling. We, as women, think we have to be all things to so many people. But that’s rarely the case. I have found how amazing it is when I ask for help and I see how people are willing to help when I need it.
Push Past Your Fear
But how do we trudge up the courage to ask for it?
I recently read a book, “Morning Miracles” by Hal Elrod and in his book he encourages his readers to email a group of people including family, friends, and colleagues. In doing so, he says, ask your email group to identify 3 of your weaknesses and have them be honest with you. This takes a lot of courage to send an email to people you know and ask for this, but in reading about how people have done this exercise and how they felt after receiving the emails back, was quite inspiring.
Right now, I am taking a blogging course and the next step that I am supposed to do is email my entire email list asking them if they would read a blog post that I pick and give me their honest assessment. That is terrifying for me. Admitting to everyone that I know that I even have a blog and then asking them to read it. Putting myself out there to people who I know.
Both of these situations are extremely uncomfortable for me.
But, I know I want to do both of these things because I know they will strengthen my personal and professional developments. But to do them, I need to build up my courage. And how do you build up your courage? Here are 3 ways:
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
Do things that are a bit out of your comfort zone. Each time you do something that doesn’t feel comfortable and safe, you’ll be building up your courage little by little. We all have to start somewhere, so it doesn’t matter how you start but that you’re starting. Begin with something small, like a small goal you’re working on and choose to do something that you don’t really want to do. Each time you decide to do something that doesn’t feel comfortable, you’ll be building up your courage. Strive for doing one uncomfortable thing each day and after one month, you’ll be amazed at much you’ve built up your courage.
Daily Affirmations
By saying affirmations, eventually, you’ll start believing them. Say things that will build up your courage, like telling yourself you can do something that you don’t think you can do or don’t think you’re capable of. Our subconscious has a lot of power over us and by saying positive affirmations, you’ll slowly start changing your mindset into believing what you’re saying. Say these affirmations every day and after about 30 days of saying them repeatedly, you’ll start believing in them. That’s worth about a minute of your time every day.
Change Your Attitude
Your attitude toward things that are difficult and hard will say a lot about how you feel about them. If you have a negative attitude about doing something, it will be much harder for you to commit to it. By changing your attitude toward these things, you’ll start seeing them in a more positive way. One way I have found to be extremely beneficial in changing my attitude is by being grateful for everything in my life. You can start a gratitude journal and write in it every day or just be mindful for things you’re grateful for as you go through your day. When you’re faced with doing a difficult task, try to see something positive about it or envision how you’ll feel when it’s done. This will change your attitude if you stick with it.
My challenge for you is to build up your courage so you can go after the things you want in life. It will be scary and hard but remember these things – get out of your comfort zone, do daily affirmations, and change your attitude. Ruth Gordon once said,
“Courage is very important. Like a muscle, it is strengthened by use”.
How will you use your courage? What hard things will you choose to do? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!!
