Can money bring you happiness? I used to think it didn’t. I mean, when someone wins the lottery, more times than not the winners end up worse than how they started.
To understand that point, read this post from the Business Insider. Story after story, people were worse off than before they won any money. Some blew it all on friends and family, others spent it on themselves lavishly, some even killed or committed suicide just because of these winnings. So how could money bring happiness?
So, you can see why I thought money can’t bring you happiness. Sure they were all happy when they won the money but now they’re probably wishing they never won it in the first place.

Then I got reading the “Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin and she went on to say how money can bring you happiness but it’s all in how we use it.
So, here are 7 ways that money does bring happiness. Keep these in mind if you’re ever so lucky to win a large amount of money.

7 Ways Money Can Bring Happiness
Allows For More Fun
Sure you could completely blow it with this statement. But what I mean is not buying the next shiny thing that you come across but spend the money wisely on fun experiences. Go on trips and take friends with you. Experience the fun that money can bring to you by doing more fun things. Sign up for a dance class, get out and golf more. Just don’t waste it on cars and houses and material things that you might get sick of over time or may not be able to afford after some time. Be smart but have fun.
Minimizes Marital Problems
Ever get annoyed when you ask your hubby to do something like, oh say, paint the room he said he was going to do or finish the project he started 3 months ago? Any of that sound familiar? A lot of problems in marriages are due to the lack of communication. Wife nags, husband tunes it out. But if you had a sizable amount of money you could hire out the help. All the remodeling projects your husband said he would get to, now can be the job of a college kid or a professional.
Exercising is Affordable
We all know the benefits of exercise – more energy, better mood. But a lot of us don’t have the time, the energy, or the mood to exercise. But if you had some extra money, you could hire a personal trainer or get some exercise equipment in your own home. And just a hunch but I think if you started working out, your energy and your mood would increase and you would feel like you had more time.
Can Afford Healthier Foods
Food plays into how we feel. If we are putting junk food into our bodies, we are going to feel worse inside. But if we had the means to buy healthier foods (because we all know that healthier foods costs more money than taking a run to McDonald’s), we would feel better inside by eating them. In turn, eating healthier would put us into a better mood and give us a better outlook on life.

Strengthens Social Bonds
You’d be able to throw parties and go out more. Studies have shown our happiness increases the more we interact with other people. You could throw a Super Bowl Party or a 4th of July Party with much ease. You wouldn’t have to worry about how much the party is costing and you could just enjoy being in the moment.
Increases Comfort Level
You could pay off your debt and increase your savings thus increasing your comfort level. You wouldn’t have to worry if you had enough money to pay for next month’s bills. You wouldn’t have to worry if you’d have enough food to feed your family. You’d feel safer and the less you worry, the better you’ll feel.
Give Money Away
It’s possible to do this in a way that’s meaningful to you. Donate to a cause that’s close to your heart or help someone in need. You’d feel like you were making a difference in someone’s life and that would warm your heart. Just be mindful and don’t give away too much.

Final Thoughts
I’ve changed my viewpoints. Of course, someone could blow all the money they receive but there is a lot of good that can come if you are fortunate to come across a large sum of money. It’s all in how you handle it. As James Clear points it out, we all have a choice:
“Wealth is the power to choose.
Financial wealth is the power to choose how to spend money.
Social wealth is the power to choose who to hang out with.
Time wealth is the power to choose how to spend your day.
Mental wealth is the power to choose how to spend your attention.”
If you’re smart with the money you receive, it could last you a lifetime. The best thing you can do if you win a large sum of money is to only spend a certain amount. Then, invest the rest so it can keep growing.
If you ever come into terms with a large amount of money, how will you handle it?
