Food is a necessity. Everyone needs to shop for food. But when we shop, how do we know we are getting the best deal? Do grocery stores have secrets and do those secrets affect our shopping?

How you shop could be completely different from how someone else shops. You may shop at night during the week and someone else may shop only on the weekends. You may shop 2-3 days out of a week where someone else may shop once every 2 weeks. But did you know that there is a day when it’s the best time to shop and how the store is laid out plays into what we buy when we go into a grocery store?

22 Tips and Tricks at the Grocery Store

 

1. Shop less during the week. Try going to a store only once a week. The more you shop the more you’ll buy. Fewer trips mean fewer impulse buys. You don’t need those extra non-food items you picked up because it’s now your third time to the store in a week.

2. Eat what’s in season. Fresh produce grown locally is typically the best value at the grocery stores and farmer’s markets. Think berries in the summertime. Lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower are in season in the springtime, usually around March. You can get bananas and potatoes all year-round for a bargain. Visit your local farmer’s market to see what’s in season.

3. Choose the right size cart. Most times, when we choose a bigger cart than we need, we’ll overspend. Shop with a smaller cart or a basket if you can. You’ll buy what you need and won’t have room for extra things.

4. Shop Aldi’s for cheaper products. Their meat and produce are great buys. Just be careful with some name brand products. You may pay higher for those so just watch for that. Most of their store products though are cheaper than your typical grocery store and I’ve been very pleased with them. They’re growing like crazy too so if you don’t have one by you, you may soon.

5. Beware of club warehouses. Not everything is a deal there. Just be careful and do your homework. Sometimes you can find a better deal with a sale at a grocery store.

6. Things at eye level are more expensive. They’re at your eye level so you’ll see them first. Your top and bottom shelves have the cheaper products. So make sure you look up and down before selecting your item.

7. Shop with a list. Too many people go without a list and pick up way more than they need thus overspending. Going with a list (and meal planning before you shop) will save you money.

8. Shop the best time. Wednesday is a good day to shop but Wednesday night is the best time to shop. If you can, shop then. It’s the slowest time at grocery stores and it’s proven shoppers spend more money when it’s busy.

9. Watch for water weight in produce. Ever notice those sprayers that spray lettuce and other greens? It’s to make their produce shinier but it adds weight. Do yourself a favor and shake out the moisture before you bag it. Don’t give the store any extra money than you have to.

10. Not all bagged produce is equal. Those bagged apples or potatoes, they say there 5 pounds but they might not all be 5 pounds. It’s worth it to weigh them and take the highest one.

11. Shop at grocery stores that offer gas incentives. I’m in PA and Giant Foods offers $.10 off/gallon for every $100 spent in a given month. Take advantage of these incentives at your local grocery stores.

12. Use the store’s app if they have one. Most stores have digital coupons that you can “clip” from their app to give you additional savings. Once the digital coupons are “clipped”, just use your store loyalty card to get the savings. It’s super easy and doesn’t take much extra time.

13. There’s a reason milk is in the back. Stores know you need to go through the store to get it. Don’t let that tempt you into buying things you don’t need.

15. Don’t buy produce that’s already prepped. You’ll always pay more for the convenience. Instead, buy regular produce and take one night to chop it all for the week. This will save you time instead of having to chop it each time you need it.

16. If you’re shopping at more than one store in a week, bring a cooler bag and get it done the same day. Fewer days out to stores will help with overspending.

17. Use a calculator when shopping. Know your running total as you shop. Doing this can allow you to put things back if you’re over your budgeted amount.

18. Beware of sneaky sales like 10/$10. That’s not always a deal. There are times when a product is listed 10/$10 but it’s normally priced under a dollar.

19. Use coupons. Clip from the Sunday newspaper or print coupons online. You can save on average $5/week with coupons. That’s $260/year so it’s well worth it!

20. Always look at the unit price to find the cheapest. Just because it’s on sale, a bigger item may still be cheaper. And smaller servings are usually more money per unit.

21. Don’t buy non-food items at the grocery store. They are usually higher priced. You are better off getting personal care items and paper products at a discount store.

22. Don’t buy so much. Americans waste so much food every year. Meal plan before you shop and for perishable items, only buy what you will eat that week according to your meal plan.
