Do you struggle each week with money, living paycheck to paycheck? Thinking there’s nothing you can do and you’re just stuck this way. That’s very frustrating thinking you can never get ahead with your money. It could be your spending that is causing you difficulties with your finances. So, let’s see if that’s the case and hopefully I can help you get started in saving some money. Wouldn’t that be nice?
For starters, gather your credit card statements or log in to your bank account and see where your money is going. Another option is to track your spending over the next 30 days by keeping receipts. Most times, if you’re looking to save money, you can find ways to cut down on your spending habits.

Impulse buying can be one of the largest culprits to overspending. Credit cards make it very easy to do it too. We go to the store and find something we like and know we don’t really have to pay for it right now if we use a credit card. We aren’t holding ourselves accountable for our impulse buys that we make when a credit card is used.

Here are 8 ideas to help you stop those impulses and ways to turn it around.
LEAVE YOUR CREDIT CARD IN THE CAR OR AT HOME
Not having your credit card with you will allow you to have a lot more restraint than if the credit cards were in your wallet. Knowing you have to go out to your car or go home to get the credit card will give you extra time to think if the purchase is really worth it. We recently did a no spending challenge and after a couple of days into our challenge, I had the urge to shop at Target. So I left my credit cards at home and went to the store. I knew if i went to that store with money, I would have bought something. My only choice was to leave it at home.
DON’T SHOP WHEN YOU ARE UPSET
Chances are, you’ll be more inclined to buy something when you’re upset to help make you feel better. Call a friend or a family member instead. At least then you won’t have buyer’s remorse.
CHANGE YOUR WAY OF THINKING
When you’re at a store and you see something you want to buy, imagine if someone came up to you and offered you money instead of buying. If you think you’d choose the money, you didn’t really want or need the purchase anyway so just walk away.
.
BE AWARE OF WHO YOU ARE WITH
Some friends, although fun to hang out with, may not be the best shopping partner. If you see your friend spending freely and buying lots of things, you may want to buy things too. On the flip side, if you have a friend that is a frugal shopper, their frugal habits might rub off on you and reduce the likelihood of impulse buying. So just watch who you’re with and try to do something different than shopping when you’re with the friend that loves to shop.
DON’T LET ONLINE SHOPS STORE YOUR CREDIT INFO
Sure, it’s convenient, but is it helping your spending? Take Amazon, for example, they have the 1-click purchasing that honestly doesn’t even allow you to think much about your purchase. Removing your credit card from online stores forces you to get your credit card each time before you buy something. This provides extra time to think about the purchase before you buy.
USE A SHOPPING LIST
Going into a store with a list in your hand and telling yourself that you will only buy what’s on the list, will help you each time you shop. But you must stick to your list!
BUY THINGS THAT ARE EASY TO RETURN
Shop at stores that offer easy returns. If you change your mind after buying something, you’ll know you can easily return it and get your money back. But be aware that stores keep track of returns so make sure you don’t abuse a store’s easy return policy.
FREEZE YOUR CARD
If all else fails and you are having trouble curbing your impulse buying, try freezing your credit card in a bowl of water. This will not allow you to have a credit card when you need it. By limiting your ability to use the credit card until it thaws, you are forcing yourself to wait and ponder about the need for that purchase. Most times, when we have to wait awhile, we reconsider our purchases.
I believe these techniques will help you with identifying ways to save money. Start with just one or two of these ideas, and see how much you can improve and slowly change your spending habits to begin saving money.
Changing a habit can be difficult in the beginning. Taking small steps can bring big results.
You can do this. Keep positive.
