Call Your Bank / Credit Card Companies
I know what you’re thinking, what will this do? But I know for a fact what it will do. They will work will you the best they can. They want to help you. But you have to call to find out. There is no shame in calling and you have nothing to lose. And here’s what you can ask for:
Can your interest rate be lowered?
Is there a lower rate or 0% financing available on balance transfers (if you owe money in other places)?
Can debt be consolidated and a payment plan be started?
Bottom line, your bank wants you to succeed. They want to help. And you have no idea what your bank or credit card company will say so give it a try. It never hurts to ask.
Budgeting
Now, going forward, you will need to setup a budget and stick with it. If you keep spending beyond your means, you’ll never get ahead. You’ll need to stick to the limits you’ve setup for yourself in your budget so you can start seeing progress with your debt.

Open Communication
This is key. If you and your partner aren’t on the same page when it comes to your finances, nothing will work. My husband and I discuss all of our purchases over $100. Now, this does not include amounts that we spend to run our home and feed our family. We only ask each other on things we personally want. We respect each other and our finances to communicate anything that falls into this category.
Now, knowing my husband and my personalities, this is usually interesting. Following the popular book, “The Four Tendencies” by Gretchen Rubin, I am an Obliger and my husband is a Questioner. With my personality, I pretty much go along with what he wants to get within reason. On the other hand, with his personality, he questions everything so if I want to buy something that fits within those limits that we’ve set, I have to be ready for his line of questioning. But I also know that it’s part of his personality so it doesn’t bother me. And recently, although this goes against my personality, I’ve started to question some things my husband wants to get so we always have our money as our best interests.

Be Honest With Yourself
You’re going to have a difficult time saving money if you’re a spender. Sorry that was blunt but that’s the reality. Your budget will tell you what you can spend money on and how much and you need to stick with it. If you don’t, you’ll be blowing your chances of paying off your debt earlier. Be honest with yourself and know your limits. The more you can control your spending, the easier it is to not spend money. Spend less than you make and you’ll be set to paying off your debt.
