Each month, food expenses are typically one of the highest expenses in a household. It roughly costs a family about 10% of their household income. This includes grocery costs and eating out at a restaurant.

An average 4-member family spends about $215/week or $860/month on groceries. Some may spend more and some less but most of us would like to see our food expenses decrease.

I’m here to show you some mobile apps that you can download to your smartphone that will help you achieve this. Who wouldn’t want the chance to make some money on their groceries?

Listed below are my favorite mobile apps that I make the most money from. All of these apps are available for Android and Apple devices. Once downloaded, they’re very easy to use.

Here’s some information about each of them.

IBOTTA

Once in this app, decide what store you’ll be shopping at, browse the offers, and select the items you plan on buying. Then go shopping. When you’ve bought something that has a rebate, open the app, use the in-app camera to take a picture of your product’s barcode and receipt, and then collect your money once approved. Each rebate has its own expiration date. Just click on an item to see when it expires and make sure you buy it and get your receipt scanned before it does. Ibotta allows you to cash out when you have earned $20. You can transfer your earnings to your PayPal account, Venmo, or gift cards.

CHECKOUT 51

This works like Ibotta. Browse the offers and select the ones you want to redeem, and then go shopping. Then, use the in-app camera to submit your receipt when you’ve purchased something with a rebate. Some items require the barcode to be scanned too. New offers go live every Thursday at 12 AM. They expire the following Wednesday at 11:59 PM so make sure you get your receipt in before your offers go away. Checkout51 allows you to cash out when your balance reaches $20 and they will send you a check. Just download the app and get started.

FETCH REWARDS

This app is very easy to use and simple to understand. There isn’t any work beforehand which I love. After downloading the app, just scan your grocery receipt from any store. Fetch Rewards then finds points for you on all of their listed brands and products. Check the app for the list of participating brands and exclusive special offers. Once you’ve accumulated points (3,000 minimum), you can redeem them on dozens of great rewards, like Amazon gift cards.

Go here to signup. You’ll want to then scan the QR code and once you’ve signed up with the necessary information, it will ask for a referral code. Enter AM5QA at that time to receive 2,000 points ($2.00) after your first completed receipt!

SAVINGSTAR

This app works a little different. Most times, you register your loyalty cards for each store you shop at in their app. It’s the same type of deal, where you select the items you are planning to buy. When you buy an item at a grocery store and use your loyalty card (and you’ve already registered the card with SavingStar), you’ll receive your savings from SavingStar without doing any more work. Posts take between 2-22 days depending on the store. You’ll receive an email once the money is credited to your account.

If you shop at a store where there isn’t a loyalty card (like Target and Walmart), you can still receive a rebate as long as you have shopped at one of SavingStar’s approved stores. Add the store before you go shopping and when you’ve bought something that has a rebate, take a photo of your receipt using the in-app camera. You’ll receive your earnings once approved.

You can cash out at SavingStar once your account reaches $5. They will issue payment to your PayPal account, your bank account, or there are some options for gift card purchases.

Know the Limits

All of these mobile apps have a time limit for when you need to have receipts in. Listed below are each of these limits:

Ibotta – you have one week after your shopping trip to select items and scan your receipt.

Checkout51 – offers are live for one week (schedule listed above). Select offers before shopping and receipt must be scanned within that week, before offers expire.

Saving Star – offers are offered at the beginning of the month, most of the time and expiration dates are marked on each item. Offers must be selected before shopping. Loyalty cards must be added before shopping or receipts must be scanned for stores without loyalty cards. Receipts must be scanned within 3 days after an offer expires.

Fetch Rewards – receipts must be scanned within 14 days of your shopping trip.
