How would you feel if you could wake up on a tropical island? Step outside and feel the air all around you. The place that you’re in is serene. There’s bare minimum furniture around, a few pieces of art on the walls, and no visible clutter anywhere.
Visualize this space, close your eyes, and see how you feel. Do you feel calm and relaxed? Do you feel your worries slip away? And why do you think you feel this way?

Why is it when we go on vacation, do we feel differently than we do back at home? Really think about that. Is it because you’re away from work or is it because you’re away from your home? Away from having to do chores, wash dishes, and clean bathrooms.
It’s funny, we can almost have those same feelings as we did at the tropical island. As we did when we were on vacation. Of course, if work is the biggest reason why you feel peaceful on vacation and nothing to do with your home then this blog post won’t help you. Unfortunately, this isn’t going to help your work situation.
But if it’s your home that brings you anxiety, ask yourself why?
I know it’s possible to have peace and calm in your home and here’s how you can do that.

Calm Your Home
Calm Your Living Space
Look at your living space and how does it make you feel? What’s on the table tops, the floor, the walls? Is there anything you don’t like. Be honest with yourself. The first step to bringing calm into your life and home is removing the clutter. You can not be at peace with your home with visual clutter. And clutter is anything that doesn’t belong or anything you truly don’t want in your living space or your life.
But, say you have a statue that you got from Egypt and it’s sitting on your living room floor and every time you look at it, it brings you happiness and reminds you of your time in Egypt. This is not clutter. Everyone that comes into your home may make fun of the statue and that’s okay. You find joy within that statue so it stays exactly where you want.
Clutter is everything you don’t want, that doesn’t bring you joy when you look at it. Be ruthless about this.

Another way to bring in calm to your living space is with scents and essential oils. If there are any scents that you particular like, bring those into your space. If you don’t like the thought of candles, use a diffuser to diffuse your essential oils.
Color it another way that will bring calm. What colors make you feel happy? The color blue is known to be calming. Green has been said to be easier on your eyes. According to Kelly Norman at the Pratt Institute, she says green is easier on your eyes because there’s “less of a strain on your eye muscles because the color green gets focused directly on the retina”. Try painting a room green or bring in plants to put around the room. Both would bring peacefulness. Find out what color brings you that calmness and use it.
Visual serenity is another way to bring you calm. Like I said with the statue, any visual, appealing art or collectible that you enjoy will bring calmness. Go with your heart on this. Only keep things that bring you happiness and joy.
Calm Your Kitchen
If your kitchen countertops are cluttered with stuff and your sink is piled high with dishes, how does that make you feel? You can’t even see your countertops or the bottom of your sink. The amount of visual clutter is stifling. Wouldn’t you agree?
By clearing off your countertops, it will clear your mind.
And then there’s the sink. Did you know that the amount of time it takes to wash dishes and unload the dishwasher, doesn’t really take that long? That it’s all in our minds that it will take a lot of time. Unloading a dishwasher takes about 5 minutes. Washing dishes in a sink doesn’t take long either if you don’t let them build up. Tackle your dishes after every meal. And remember this, it’s much easier keeping up with something than catching up. Don’t let things build up to make more work for yourself.
Look at your fridge, the outside of it. What’s on it? Do you have pictures, a calendar, and magnets all over the place. Remove anything that you don’t need or use. Can it be put somewhere else in the home? This is another one to be ruthless about. A cluttered fridge door is distracting and takes away your calm.

Calm Your Closet
Have you ever heard of the popular book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo? I read it a couple of years ago and it was quite inspiring. It got me to change how I view everything in my home. Her philosophy is that we shouldn’t keep things in our home that don’t spark joy inside of us.
Now, when it comes to your closet, Marie Kondo says to pick up each item, hold it up to yourself, and ask yourself if that item brings joy. If it does, keep it. If it doesn’t, donate it or throw it away depending on the condition. This does work, I have minimized a lot of stuff in my closet that I wasn’t wearing and didn’t need anymore.
Here are two other ideas to consider f you aren’t motivated by Marie Kondo’s ideas. The first one is to create a capsule wardrobe which basically is starting with a few fundamental pieces and then building on those to create your capsule wardrobe. The other idea is to create a 40 hanger closet which means to minimize everything in your closet until you get to 40 pieces of clothing. Both of these ideas will minimize what you have which will create calm in your home and your life.
Look in your whole closet. Are there other things in there that aren’t clothes? Maybe you have boxes of stuff, shoes, purses, bags, and many other things. Take a look at all of these things too and see what you don’t need or want anymore. If you aren’t going to use it, there’s no sense in holding on to it. Be honest with yourself.

Final Thoughts
Having too much stuff in your home will create anxiety and overwhelm in your life. Get rid of the clutter and chaos in your home.
The more clutter you can remove from your home, the more anxiety will be lifted from you. Bring calmness into your home so you can enjoy your home. You can have a home that you love spending time in.
