Moving. Most of us have done this some time in our life. Maybe it was moving with your family growing up, moving away to college, or moving when you’re an adult.
You’ve probably experienced it but chances are, you didn’t love it and hope it never happens again. You cringe at the thought of the long process of packing, the painful experience of moving, and the dreaded task of unpacking that’s inevitable. Say, do you have any boxes still unpacked from your last move? I’m not judging, there just might be a few of those in my basement.
GET YOUR LIFE IN CONTROL!
Ever feel like you're spinning out of control? Are you longing for a calmer life? My Happy Life Starter Guide will give you the 3 steps to beat overwhelm so YOU can start living a happier life. Get it now while it’s free!
My family and I have moved 8 times since we married 15 years ago and if you’re wondering, we are not in the military. Most of these moves were due to employment. But, will all of these moves, I’ve gotten pretty used to packing and have learned a few things along the way.
So, if you’re facing another move or your first move, read these tips that have helped my family have a peaceful and organized moving experience.

10 Ways To Conquer Your Next Move
- Purge your belongings. Go through your home and decide what doesn’t fit you or your lifestyle anymore, bring you joy to see it, or hasn’t been unpacked since your last move. Don’t move things you know you don’t want or won’t use again. Donate, sell, or throw out everything that fits this description and do this immediately. The longer it sits in your home, the more likely it will never leave and the more overwhelmed you’ll feel. Getting things out of your home will allow you to clear out the clutter when it’s time to pack.

. - Start packing early. Once you know the season the move is happening, you can pack up your off-season items. If moving in the summer, pack winter items like pants, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, and anything else you know you won’t need before the move. Also, think of any kitchen items (like small appliances) that you won’t need until you move. You can box them up early if you won’t need them.
. - Make a detailed timeline of events. When it comes to hiring a mover, getting boxes, reserving moving trucks, forwarding mail, and everything else that occurs during moving time, it can seem overwhelming. Having a timeline of events will keep you organized and in control.
. - When labeling every box, color code them too by room. No one wants to read every box coming into their new home on move-in day. When boxes are color-coded by room, it’s a quick, simple glance to know where it belongs.
. - Pack items by room. This will make unpacking easier and quicker because everything for that room will be boxed together and not in random boxes spread across your home.
. - Use items around your home for packing. Use things like luggage, hampers, and laundry baskets for packing. Wardrobe boxes are wonderful for packing clothes but they are expensive. If you’re looking to save money, use a garbage bag and drop your clothes into a bag while the clothes are still hanging, and then tie it around the hanger. When you’re done with the move, you can reuse the garbage bag for your trash. Also, use socks to wrap around delicate items.

- Use shrink-wrap. This stuff is amazing for moving. It holds furniture covers in place to protect furniture from nicks and scratches. When you have to take an item apart, wrap up the screws together and then wrap them around the item to keep everything together. Group like things together and wrap them. Wrap an item to keep doors or drawers shut. Remove dresser drawers and instead of unpacking the drawer, wrap the drawer and keep the contents inside. Wrap the remote control to the TV. Holds bubble wrap around an item. Holds delicate items wrapped in towels. And many other uses. We have used this item in every move and I wouldn’t do a move without it.
Note: If you are looking to get some shrink-wrap, the one with a rotating handle works best. The stationary handle, like this one, is harder to work with.
- Have a clearly marked box or two of things you will need upon move-in day. Think things like toilet paper, cleaners, sheets, shower curtain, toiletries, towels, etc. Put things in these boxes that you know you’ll need quickly and you won’t want to hunt for them on move-in day.
. - Break up tasks into small, manageable ones. Moving is very overwhelming and most of the time, it’s because we try to do everything at once. But, by breaking down big tasks into chunks, you can focus on one thing at a time.
. - Plan some freezer meals in disposable baking trays. These are great for those couple of days before the move when all of your kitchen items are packed up. They are also wonderful on move-in day when everyone is tired and no one wants to cook. And there is minimal clean-up to do after dinner for an added bonus.
I hope you’ll use these tips for your next move for a more organized and peaceful move. Make moving an experience you won’t dread if it happens again. Just use these tips – purge, pack early, create a timeline of events, color-code boxes, pack by room, use your things for packing, use shrink-wrap, pack a couple of boxes for move-in day, prepare meals, and focus on one thing at a time.
