10 Ways to Relieve Stress Without Costing a Dime
Meditation
Meditation relaxes are bodies. It clears our minds and puts us in contact with a higher being. It grounds us and brings calmness to our lives. All of our worries and stresses lift away when we’re in the moment. It’s incredibly powerful.
But I know, your thinking you could never get your mind to shut off. I get it and used to think the same way. In fact, I tried meditating on my own and just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t get my mind to shut off and quiet down. Then, I discovered an app that I absolutely love. It’s called the Stop, Breathe & Think app. Now, I’m able to meditate when I want to.
It’s really amazing what meditation has done for my life. I used to be so hard on myself and think I wasn’t enough. Since I started meditating, my stress has decreased and I am much more empathetic toward myself and others.
Give meditation a try, you won’t be sorry.
Be Around Other People
When we’re around friends or acquaintances and we’re open to having conversations with others, it boosts our moods. There’s been many studies done that say relationships with other people are the best medicine for us. Get out and surround yourself with other people. It will put you in a better mood, relieve your stress, and make you happy.
Breathe
This about deep breathing. When stress tries to take hold of you, just calmly take some death breaths. Close your eyes and breathe in and out slow and steady. Those deep breaths will bring all your stress and anxiety back to ground zero.
Get Outside
It’s hard to stay mad or upset when we are outside getting fresh air. Breathe it in. Go for a short walk. Let the tension that has you by the throat be released.
Creative Outlet
Adult coloring books are very therapeutic. Try it and see for yourself. You could also try other arts and crafts like sewing or quilting. Or do you have any hobbies that you enjoy? Try those. Doing something you enjoy will change your mood and relieve the stress you were feeling.
Journal Your Thoughts
Ever try writing your feelings down? It’s incredibly powerful. I do this a lot. If I’m feeling anxious about something, I’ll write it down and then follow it up with why I don’t think it’s true. It changes my viewpoint every time.
You can also do this with a brain dump. Just dump out what ever is on your mind. Sometimes, stress is around because of all that needs to get done. But, if you write everything down, you’ll have less of a chance to forget something.
Try a gratitude journal. Instead of focusing on the bad, write down the good in your life. And it could be anything. A roof over your head, the weather outside, that you paid your last utility bill, or that you made it into work safely. Just think of anything good, no matter how big or small it is. Make this a habit and it will change your attitude towards life.
Pets
Ever notice how an animal can change your mood? Even seeing a dog walking outside can change my mood. It puts a smile on my face. I don’t have any dogs right now but I grew up with them. If you’re feeling down or angry, spend time with an animal (especially dogs). They aren’t judgmental and most are very caring.
Exercise
It’s well-known that exercise reduces stress. And you can do this in many forms. You could do a high intensity workout, yoga, or go for a run. You could stretch using exercise bands. There are numerous possibilities but the idea here is to do some form of exercise to relieve your stress. Use YouTube for inspiration and ideas.
Laughter
What makes you laugh? How about funny movies? Do you enjoy comedy? Do your kids crack you up? Find what makes you laugh and get as much of it as you can. It’s great for our souls and it crushes our stress.
Music
What kind of music do you love listening too? What music puts you in a good mood when you hear it? When stress rears its ugly head, listen to the music that you enjoy and puts you in a better mood. Depending on where you live, check and see if there are any free music festivals going on in your area.
Final Thoughts
Next time stress is all around you, use this list to relieve it. Stress isn’t good for your health or your well-being so don’t let it linger when it presents its ugly self.
Remember these steps – meditate, be around others, breathe, laugh, exercise, be around pets, surround yourself with music, journal your thoughts, start a creative outlet, and enjoy the outdoors. By actively taking part in these steps, you will reduce your stress level and may come to a time when you experience no more stress. Wouldn’t that be nice?
