Make Laundry Enjoyable in 6 Easy Ways

Chores are brutal and constant.  We no sooner get our house cleaned, then we have to start all over again.  It’s an everyday occurrence and it’s frustrating when we feel we have no more energy at the end of the day to make cleaning even happen.

But we all know that letting things build up is not fun either.  It makes more work for us and then there is too much to catch up on.  And catching up is always harder than keeping up.

One of the most nagging chores we have to do though is laundry.  Literally, the moment we’re done and all the clothes are put away, do we feel there is more to do.  It never feels done, even for a day.

And unless you do laundry all the time, it builds up so quickly.  Before you know, you’re left with a mountain of laundry to tackle.  Sometimes, it gets worse and someone in your family is telling you they don’t have any clean clothes.

Can I tell you this has happened to me?  I neglected to do laundry for far to long and my son (when he was about 5 years old) ran out of clean underwear.  That was not a proud mom moment.  Please tell me I’m not alone with this!

But I get it.  Laundry has to be done so often and most days, we just don’t have the energy for it.

So, how do we balance getting the laundry done when we just don’t have the desire to do it?  Well, we try to add a little fun to the task.  We might as well make the best of a chore that will never go away.

Here are 6 ways to enjoy doing laundry (or at least make it bearable):

Start Planning

Plan the night before.  I know this doesn’t sound fun but it makes such a difference in the morning when you don’t have to put much thought into starting your washer.  Just gather up the loads of laundry that you want to tackle for the next day.  Get your first load into the washer.  Then, on the next morning (or when you plan on starting it), just start your washer.  If you happen to have a delay function on your washer, use it on busy mornings when you want to start the washer before you wake up.
.
This takes little thought to get your first load of laundry started for the day.  The longer you plan to get your laundry done, you will start getting into a routine.

Take Away Guessing

Set a timer for when you think the wash will finish (or the dryer).  This way you won’t have to keep checking on it and you won’t have to worry about forgetting it and then having to deal with moldy, stinky clothes or a load of wrinkled clothes.

Watch Your Attitude

Keep a positive attitude about laundry.  Tell yourself it will be a quick job transferring the laundry to the dryer.  Tell yourself it will only take 5 minutes to fold the laundry.  If you have a negative attitude about doing the laundry, you’ll be killing your motivation and your energy.  Have a positive attitude and your tasks will seem quicker and not so painful.

Finish a Full Load Everyday

Strive for finishing one full load every day.  Folding and putting away one basket of clean clothes is a task.  Folding and putting away 3 baskets of clean clothes is a chore.  Keep your laundry minimal every day and it won’t feel so overwhelming.

Listen to Something Fun

When it comes to folding and putting away laundry, listen to something fun.  Play music, listen to a Podcast, watch TV, or listen to an audiobook.  You could even call a friend or a family member (without using your hands).  If you are doing something you enjoy, it won’t feel like a chore.

I also heard this recently from Cas from Clutterbug about having a body double while you’re doing something you don’t particularly want to do.  For example, maybe talking to a friend as you fold your laundry (on the phone or through video) while they’re folding their laundry.  Also maybe having a family member to talk to (or help) while your folding laundry may make the task more enjoyable.

Start a Routine

Get into a routine.  Do your laundry every day so it doesn’t build up.  By consistently doing your laundry every day, you’ll start getting into a routine which will build a habit.  Once it’s a habit, doing laundry won’t take much thought.  And any chore that’s done without much thought is better than constantly thinking about it and dreading it.

Get Started

Start building your routine today.  Get into the habit every day of doing laundry.  And remember these key ideas – plan the night before, set a timer so you don’t get distracted, keep a positive attitude, don’t get overwhelmed, and do something fun while folding and putting away the clothes.

Laundry is one of the most demanding chores we have to do (dishes is the other one).  By doing these steps, you can at least make the task bearable.  And that is so much better than dreading any task.
