Laundry can be one of the most demanding and frustrating chores we have to do. It’s hard to get ahead of it and it has to be done so frequently. And it’s so easy to get behind and next thing you know, there’s nothing to wear! And our homes are in complete disarray with all the piles of laundry around.
We’ve all been there. Feeling tired one day so we decide to push laundry to the next day, just another day. Then something comes up that day and more laundry gets pushed back. And finally, someone’s out of something to wear. It’s a terrible, vicious cycle.
One day, one of my kids had to tell me on a school morning that he didn’t have any underwear to wear!! Oh crap, well my son had to wear his underwear two days in a row. It was horrible!

I got so frustrated by my own setbacks that I needed a better way to handle laundry. Things needed to change. I was tired of the excuses I was using to push laundry to another day. I knew laundry didn’t take long to do each day and I knew it was time to change things around. These next few techniques are how I’ve gotten my laundry schedule into perfect order and I want that for you too.
Now, these tips are really designed for someone with a washer. Unfortunately, these tips don’t accommodate someone who needs to go to a laundromat although you might find some tips inspiring.
Do Laundry Daily
Don’t let laundry pile up. Our homes feel more cluttered when there are piles of laundry everywhere. And cluttered homes have us feeling overwhelmed. Get into doing laundry every day so you can stay on top of it. Otherwise, it’s so easy to get behind.
It doesn’t matter how small your laundry loads are either. Most washers nowadays base their water level on how much laundry is in there so you aren’t wasting water. The important thing is staying on top of your laundry and doing it daily will do that for you.
Setup a Routine
Establish a routine that has you doing laundry at the same time each day. Figure out when the best time of day works best with your schedule. I personally like doing laundry in the morning but I also don’t need to head out to a job first thing in the morning either. Evenings are an option too. One could be to start the load when you start dinner. Switch it after dinner when cleaning up. Then, fold and put away at the end of your night.
If you have a delay function on your washer, you can use that and get your laundry done in the morning, even with a crazy schedule. Just set your laundry the night before, use powder or pods (liquid laundry seeps in), and have your wash done when you wake up. Switch before you start getting ready and fold (and put away if you have time) right before you leave.
Stop the Excuses
We’ve all been there. Tired, overworked, stressed, and the last thing we want to think about is laundry. I get it. But you’re not doing yourself any favors by putting it off. It takes less than 5 minutes for each step – loading the washer, transferring to a dryer, and quickly folding a small load. You can take about 10 minutes each day and get a load of laundry done. Don’t let excuses stop you.
Sort if You Must
I like to sort my laundry but it does allow laundry to pile up before the load is done. With washer’s these days, you don’t need to wait until you have a full basket of clothes to do laundry. If you wash everything on cold, you won’t need to worry about colors bleeding. But do this, whatever laundry load you plan on washing the next day, prepare it the night before. Set it right by your washer or even put it inside but don’t start it. When the next day comes and your laundry is ready to start, you’ll be more inclined to do it.
Finish the Load
Finish the entire load each day. Don’t go to bed until the laundry you started that day is folded and put away. Tackling one load of laundry to completion is a task. Having to deal with a week’s worth of laundry to put away is a chore. We have enough chores in our homes, don’t let laundry be one of them.
Start today. Get control of your laundry and figure out a routine that works for you and your schedule. It may take some trial and error but you’ll find one that works for you.
I believe you will love it. No more mounds of laundry around your home. No one is running out of things to wear. You’ll feel organized and in control and your home will be calmer because of it.
