When New Year’s Day comes around, how do you usually feel? Are you excited about the new year and the new possibilities? Are you pumped up about setting new goals or New Year’s resolutions?

Usually, we set goals and resolutions and stay committed to them for some time. We might be good with them for the first few months but so many times, we let our goals fizzle out before we see any good results.

We’ll likely tell ourselves that this year will be different. This will be the year where we will succeed with our goals. We want to set goals for ourselves and feel good about them.

So, why do we give up on the goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year? And why is it so easy to give up on them when we know we shouldn’t?

Succeed With Your Goals

 

It’s because you don’t have a “why” for why you’re setting these goals. You have the best intentions for setting up your goals but you don’t know why you should strive for them each day. Essentially, you don’t have the motivation to keep pushing when times get tough.

And goals will be tough. It could be a weight loss goal that you set for yourself to lose 25 pounds. You get your gym membership, you shop for whole foods and find healthy recipes to cook at home. You tell yourself you’re going to stick with this and lose the weight. January goes well, you’ve lost 6 pounds and know if you stick with this for 6 months, you should lose the weight.

But March rolls around, the weather gets nicer and you stop going to the gym. You then start filling your head with excuses as to why this weight loss is hard and you don’t have what it takes to finish it. So you give up.

Does any of that sound familiar?

Unfortunately, we don’t usually get it right with our goals if we first haven’t decided why we want to lose those 25 pounds. Nothing that we want in life will ever come easily for us. That’s why you need your why.

Your Why Will Push You

 

Take my husband for example. In 2015, when he was only 38 years old, he went to his doctor for his yearly checkup and discovered his weight was over 200 lbs (highest he’d ever been). He was pre-diabetic and had high cholesterol (over 250). He came home from that doctor visit and said he was going to change. Diabetes scared him. His cholesterol was out of control. He needed to change and get healthy. He was young and knew he needed to and wanted to get healthy. That was his why, his motivator.

For the next year, he focused on those test results from his doctor and grilled them into his mind. He started a workout routine through BuiltLean, slowly cut sugar out of his diet, and completely changed the way he ate. After one year of staying focused and pushing himself (remembering his why), he lost 45 lbs, was no longer pre-diabetic (lowered his A1C1), and lowered his cholesterol by 50 points. As of this date, August 2020, he’s still the healthiest he’s ever been.

He succeeded because of his why. His need and want to get healthy.

Next time you decide to set a goal for yourself, ask yourself why you want to achieve it. What is your why for wanting it so badly? Once you have your why, write it down everywhere so you’ll look at it every day.

Let your why be the motivator you need to push through when times get tough and you want to give up.
