How are your mornings? Are they stressful? Frantically waking up, getting ready quickly, and barely getting out the door in time to get kids to school or you to work. It happens every morning. And you’re thinking, yesterday was the same as today, am I right?
We’ve tried to get into routines in the morning but nothing seems to stick or work. We think it must have to do with ourselves that we fail every morning. That nothing we can do will help.
But what if I told you that no matter how chronically disorganized you are, you can have a successful morning. A morning where you get more things done and lose the feeling of overwhelm. And it has nothing to do with a morning routine (although those are good once you get this down first).

Any idea what it is? If it’s not a morning routine and has nothing to do with what you do in the morning, the only time it could be would be the night before? If you guessed this, you’re correct. Having a successful morning starts with having a successful evening routine.
The reason for this is because of the planning and purpose that goes into the evening routine. This will help you with your morning since there will be less to do. Things like kid’s lunches and your lunch, scrambling to get things together, and even getting breakfast on the table. These can all be prepped and planned the night before.
Mornings
For the morning, you may do some of the following things (or all of them):
- Shower/ bath
- Get ready
- Exercise
- Eat breakfast
- Make lunch(es)
- Do work
- Clean up the kitchen or other rooms in the home
- Take care of pets
- Get kids dressed/ fed
And there could be other things that I didn’t think of.
Evenings
The idea here is getting anything you can from your morning list, done the night before.
Let’s start with the shower/bath. This could be done the night before if it will save you time in the morning. I know some people can take a super quick shower in the morning and they use that shower to wake up/start their day. And I understand not everyone will want to do this. But if you struggle to get out of the house on time every morning and your shower takes up a big part of your morning, consider moving it to the night before.
For getting ready, pick out what you’re going to wear. You can also have ready any accessories and shoes. You could be spending up to 10 minutes in the morning picking these out.
Exercise is usually an easy one to move to the evenings if you’re able to. Think of your schedule if this is doable and move it if you can. Exercising can take up to 20 minutes or longer which could be a huge time saver in the morning if moved. But keep in mind it’s best to exercise at least an hour or two after eating.
For breakfast, there are some options for make-ahead breakfast meals. This post, from The Yummy Life, has recipes for six mason jar oatmeals that are delicious. These are huge time savers in the morning since you make them ahead of time. I’ve made up to three at a time to eat over the next three days. I’m not sure if it would keep up to five days if you made five, but you could try it and see. That would give you a week’s worth for breakfast. If you’d like more ideas, do a quick search online for make-ahead breakfast ideas.
Lunches. Make these the night before. If food needs to stay cold, just throw the lunch box in the fridge and just grab it in the morning. Read this post, from Taste of Home, on lunch ideas for kids which I think adults would enjoy too.
Getting work done, is that necessary? We put so much on us and it causes us unnecessary stress. And stress hurts our health and our well-being. Your health is important and you really should think about yourself.
For cleaning, you can save it until after you’re home or wait until the weekend. If it’s quickly cleaning your breakfast dishes, just give them a quick rinse before you head out. Everything else can wait.
Pets and young kids will need to be taken care of but there are things you can do the night before. Get out clothes for your kids so you aren’t wasting time in the morning. Put the pet food in a bowl before you go to bed (you can put it up high if your dog can get to it in the middle of the night). Have the leash ready by the door with your coat (if it’s cold) and shoes.
There might be other things you do in the morning. Can you do some or all of them the night before?
Final Thoughts
The more you can do the night before will mean a more calm and peaceful morning. Our mornings usually dictate how our day will go. Having a successful morning will mean a successful day and who wouldn’t want that.
Start changing your morning and get more things done the night before. You won’t regret it.
